Language learning is a journey. And if you treat it like a journey, it really becomes a trip.
Literally. In Mongolian there's an expression "long tongue, long legs" - which means learning languages will take you to far away places.
And I didn't learn Mongolian. I learned that from a girl I met in Taiwan. We both came from afar to learn Chinese.
After studying for 3 years in college, letting it go, and then living in Taiwan for the past 2 years, I've found two things to be true:
Slow is the way to go.
and
Context, context.
Yes you can learn fast with flashcards and whatever. But when you learn a word at the bar with a stranger, or during a game with friends, it sticks with you for life. Yes it's a much slower process, but it's so much more fun!
