A Year Off

2025-08-15

I haven't worked in over a year. I didn't plan it that way. But I quit my job without a plan, and had plenty of savings.

In that time, I traveled to 8 countries. Moved from Taiwan to Japan. Made it home to visit family in America, twice. And picked up surfing and deejaying.

Sounds great. And anyone would kill for the life I had this past year. But most of the time I was miserable.

Everyone says they would quit their job and travel if they won the lottery. I did that. And it sucked (a lot of the time).

Lost. Without purpose. Feeling useless. The lack of work made me depressed. And I had so much time that I ended up wasting almost all of it.

I learned the hard way. We need to be employed. In something. Life is not all about chilling.

I mean, try it. It won't take you a year to realize that it's better to work.

Your life has purpose and direction. You feel of value. You're caring about something other than your self. Instead of wondering what to do half the time.

Idle hands are the devil's workshop. If I could go back I would've planned better. Bookended an extended trip or vacation with full-time work. But now I know.

I've made it out the other side. I've recently started teaching online part-time, and have a new full-time job starting next week.

Don't long for a life without work. It's a void. It might be fun for a week or two, but soon the demons creep in. They will literally steal your life: your time.

And that's something you can't get back.
